Ta-da! Introducing the Crochet Miniature Christmas Gnome Ornament!
I have a question for you guys. How do you feel about gnomes? Because in my family, they’re strongly regarded as creepy, maniacal little people with evil intentions.
So naturally, there was quite a reaction when I designed these. You see, we used to have this mechanical dancing gnome toy that one of my littler siblings got at a white elephant gift exchange. We named it “Lil’ Fella”. And I won’t lie…it was pretty freaky. if you pressed a button on its hand, it would dance around and sing, “Oh there’s no place like GNOME for the holidays!!” (get it?)
But anyway, for a long time it was used as the general standard of creepiness at our house. And that’s why we’re all freaked out about gnomes now.
Recently though, I’ve acquired a kind of progressive tolerance for gnomes. Especially around Christmas time. They add a nice, quaint touch to your home decor.
I like these in particular because they’re so quick to make. It takes me probably about a half hour to make one. Also, I don’t sew on the hat. Sewing is a pain. Instead I used fabric glue (hot glue would also work). But you’re welcome to sew it on, if you would like.
Oh, and just so you know, you might end up seeing more gnome patterns soon. Just a warning, in case you’re like my family and freak out about them.

Crochet Miniature Christmas Gnome Ornament Pattern:
Materials:
-Worsted weight yarn in body color, white, and tan
-Size E (3.5 mm) crochet hook
-Stuffing
-Fabric glue
-stitch marker
-scissors and yarn needle
Stitches Used/Abbreviations:
mc – magic circle
sc – single crochet
BLO – back loop only
Gauge: Gauge really isn’t necessary for this project, just make sure you maintain the same tension throughout the project.
Pattern Notes:
-Anything between the asterisks is repeated to the end of the round.
-I would make the loop for hanging the ornament on the hat BEFORE you stuff it. It’s way easier!
-I chose to use fabric glue to attach the hat to the body. However, you can also use a hot glue gun or sew it on. It’s up to you.
-Both the body and the hat will be worked in continuous rounds. Use your stitch marker to keep track!
Body of Gnome:
In body color:
Rnd 1) mc, ch 1, 6 sc in circle.
Rnd 2) 2 sc in each stitch around.
Rnd 3) *sc in next, 2 sc in next* around.
Rnd 4) BLO sc in each stitch around.
Rnds 5-8) sc in each stitch around.
Fasten off, weave in ends.
Beard:
Cut 5 strands of white yarn, about 5″ long each. Loop through one of the stitches in the round just worked. Make a tassel with it, facing out to make one side of the beard. Skip one stitch, and do the same thing in the next stitch, making the other side of the beard.
Trim as needed.
Nose:
With tan yarn:
Rnd 1) mc, ch 1, 6 sc in circle.
Rnds 2-3) sc in each stitch around,
Fasten off, stuff lightly, and cinch up the opening. Sew to the body, in between the tassels of the beard.
Hat:
With body color:
Rnd 1) mc, 6 sc in circle.
Rd 2) sc in each st around.
Rnd 3) *sc, 2 sc* around.
Rnd 4) sc around.
Rnd 5) *sc in 2, 2 sc* around.
Rnd 6) sc around.
Rnd 7) *sc in 3, 2 sc* around.
Rnd 8) sc around.
Rnd 9) *sc in 4, 2 sc* around.
Rnd 10) sc around.
Rnd 11) *sc in 5, 2 sc* around.
Rnd 12) sc around.
Rnd 13) *sc in 6, 2 sc* around.
Fasten off, weave in ends. Make loop on the top of the hat for the ornament. Stuff the hat, but leave some room near the bottom, so you can pull it over the gnome a little.
Glue the hat to the body, and make sure to pull the hat down a little, so it looks like it’s covering the gnome’s eyes 🙂
All done!
lol These little guys are so cute! They would look adorable on a Christmas tree!
