how to crochet the easiest no sew octopus plushie

You know, there’s just something about a good octopus. No particular reason why. It’s just somehow one of the more delightful things one can possibly crochet. But what if I told you how to crochet the easiest no sew octopus?

At first, of course, you would be in a state of vehement denial. Then you would gaze at me in shock for a couple seconds. And then fall to the ground in a frenzy, weeping for joy. Because this, my friends, is indeed the easiest octopus out there.

Really though! There’s no sewing involved. All you have to do is weave in the tail at the end. It took me like 1.5 hours to make each one.

And they’re cute too!! (Not to brag or anything…) I have to hide them from my little sisters, otherwise they will steal them and squeeze them. Thus, they have earned the title of “Mr. Squishy” in this house. Well deserved, if you ask me.

Here’s a whole pile of some that I made. As you can see, “Mr. Squishy” can be constructed in many different colors and styles. I made the pink ones for Valentine’s day! Also, any #6 weight yarn will do. I used Sweet Snuggles by Loops and Threads, and Bernat blanket yarn, and both worked just fine.

Soooooo…I actually started this post a few months ago (hence the Valentine’s day reference), but now I’m finally finishing it! I think I didn’t end up posting it because we had just moved back to Wyoming. If you don’t know what I’m talking about, you can read about it here. When we got back, I found many skeins of yarn that I had forgotten about. That would probably be the reason I got distracted…

But in all honesty, these would be a great project for any time of year. You could even theme them for different holidays. Like now, you could make a Halloween one! Hey…I might have just found my next post idea…

The Easiest No-Sew Octopus Crochet Pattern:

Materials:

-Bernat Blanket yarn (or any #6 weight yarn)

-Size N (9.00 mm) crochet hook

-stitch marker

-scissors and yarn needle

-2 plastic safety eyes (I used 6 mm)

Stitches Used/Abbreviations:

mc – magic circle

ch – chain

sc – single crochet

inv dec – invisible decrease (single crochet)

Gauge: 8 sc x 8 rows = 4″ x 4″

Pattern Notes:

-Make sure your chain doesn’t get twisted when making your tentacles.

-Don’t forget when you get to a certain point to stuff the body as you go. I made this mistake and had to unwind like half of the body, so…yeah.

-You don’t need to slip stitch at the end of each round.

The Easiest Crochet No-Sew Octopus:

Rnd 1) mc, 8 sc in circle.

Rnd 2) 2 sc in each stitch around. Place your stitch marker in the first stitch of this and every round, so you can keep track of where your round begins.

Rnd 3) *1 sc in first stitch, 2 sc in next stitch* repeat from from * to the end of the round.

Rnd 4) *1 sc in next tow stitches, 2 sc in next* around.

Rnds 5-9) 1 sc in each stitch around.

Rnd 10) sc in first stitch, *ch 11, turn, 3 sc in second chain from hook and in each ch across. Sc in next stitch of the body, inv dec.* Repeat from * seven times. Ch 11, turn, 3 sc in second ch from hook and in each ch across, inv dec in last 2 stitched of round.

Insert plastic safety eyes between rnds 7 and 8, 5 stitches apart.

Rnd 12) sc in first stitch. *Going behind the first tentacle, sc in the first sc after the tentacle, and sc in the next inv dec.* repeat from * for every tentacle around. After the last tentacle, sc in the last inv dec.

Stuff the body as you go.

Rnd 13) *sc, inv dec in next st* around, sc in the last stitch.

Rnd 14) inv dec in each stitch around, 1 sc in last stitch.

Fasten off, sew up bottom, weave in ends.

Bow (optional):

With color of choice, ch 16.

Row 1) sc in second ch and in each ch across. Ch 1, turn.

Rows 2-3) sc in each stitch across, ch 1, turn.

Fasten off, sew ends together to make a loop out of the rectangle. Lay flat and wind yarn around the middle, cinching it so it looks like a bow.

And you’re done! Trust me…once you get the hang of making these, they’ll practically make themselves!
